Courageous Ducks make a safer community

Campus safety is a shared responsibility, and we’re glad to say UO students are taking that to heart.

At its annual awards ceremony in late May, the University of Oregon Police Department recognized three UO students with its Courageous Ducks award: Margaret Ashley, Zack Jansky and Jack Plew.

These students in November 2018 helped UOPD officers locate and safely arrest a potentially dangerous man who had been involved in an off-campus shots-fired incident responded to by Eugene Police. The students called UOPD when they saw a man who looked like he was unconscious, a civic-minded thing to do, because such a person could need medical help. In this case, the person was also being sought by police, and their willingness to “see something and say something” enabled a safe end to a dangerous situation.
